We assembled at our Greensborough meeting place and during the rider’s briefing we dedicated the ride to Peter Keage who had recently passed away and whose funeral was to be held this afternoon. Peter was an active club member and lifelong motorcyclist who also belonged to other clubs and was well known to club members.
We headed to Healesville for our morning tea stop and saw remains of some of the giant trees which had blown down in the ferocious winds over the past few days as road workers were still clearing them from the roadside. We departed for Kinglake and John decided, given the storms to skip Butterman’s Track and take the more likely option of Chum Creek Road. Ten minutes out of Healesville we found the road was closed and we had to do a U turn and head back to Healesville. Some of us were curious and were tempted to go on thinking a motorcycle would get through but good sense prevailed and back we went to Healesville. We took the excellent Myers Creek Road into Kinglake with no more obstacles and only light traffic.
The temperature dropped a good 5° as we approached Kinglake and kept going to Kinglake West where we had lunch at the excellent Flour Flower Bakery, tucked in behind the new Shell servo. Thanks to John and Vicki Best for leading the ride and good planning to fit a mild day in between the stormy weather with ferocious winds that we are experiencing.
