Geelong Run to Gordon

As we wanted to stay away from the Coast during the busy Easter weekend, the six of us decided to head out to Gordon near Ballarat. Great to see Andy Symons again for the ride!

We went the usual way out through the Barrabool Hlls and Merewarp Rd under Nicks’s able leadership and then Sutherlands Creek, Maude and Steiglitz, The scenery was beautiful having greened up in the recent rains and particularly later on as we wound through the wind turbines at Morrisons the ride was lovely down the ravines in crisp sunshine. The turbines sure look huge when one is next to them spinning away!

Great coffee and chat at Gordon’s at Gordon where we were entertained by the local Sunday ukelele group. A trifle noisy! After we left Gordon Fred Vella led us a route he knew through Lal Lal and Buninyong back to the Geelong/Ballarat road and Meredith.

Here’s where things got a bit interesting:

After Fred had veered off at Bannockburn to go home, Ron Study’s Harley Davidson decided to throw bits of cord off its’s drive belt and could not safely go on. There was only me, Ron and David Jordon left on the ride at this point as the others had gone home. We decided to slowly get the HD to Fred’s place about 5kms away. There he showed us around his impressive sheds and collections  of old bikes and cars. He then graciously offered to take Ron home on his trailer and David and I carried on for a kilometre or two before David ran out of petrol! We leaned his XL350 on its side to get a bit more in the tap side of the tank and the just made it back to Bannockburn Ampol with a few fumes left!

Reasonably uneventful after that, but when I got home and was putting the bike away, I noticed a tech screw in my brand new rear tyre! Upon pulling it out gales of air followed -so back to the tyre dealer..
